Question
This is for a lab practical coming up we were told we could use any source to find the answers before the test.
Solid Investigation Question: What is the identity of an unknown solid piece of metal? Specific questions 1. What are the observable physical properties of your sample? 2. If provided with a table of densities of metals, how might you use this information to identify your piece of metal? a. Given that calculating a physical constant is more reliable using a graph with multiple measurements from multiple samples than using measurements from a single sample, how could you use a graph to determine density? (y are provided metal pieces of various lengths) ou i. How would you determine volume? ii. What would you plot in order to get a slope that gives you density? iii. hat is the density of your sample?Explanation / Answer
1. Physical properties such as color, odor, texture, malleability, ductility, density are the properties which are observable.
2.
i) A beaker is immersed with a known volume of water. Then a known weight of metal is dipped into the beaker containing water. Now, the water level in the beaker increases. The increased volume is noted.
Now, density of the metal = Weight of the metal / Increased volume of water
ii) We use different weights of the sample and the corresponding volumes. Then we make a graph with weight on y-axis and volume on x- axis. thus, we get a straight line from which we get a slope value = density.
iii) This will be based on your experimental procedure.
