Question

Hydrates are solid compounds that contain water molecules. When hydrates are heated, the water molecules evaporate, producing the anhydrousform of the compound.

The formula of a hydrate may be written in two different ways. For example, aluminum chloride hexahydrate can be written as [Al(H2O)6]Cl3 or as AlCl3?6H2O. The first formula more accurately shows the bonding arrangement, whereas the second formula makes it easier to see that the anhydrous form of the compound is aluminum chloride.

Im looking for part B

this is what I tried but its wrong:

MW of heptahydrate: 246.67

MW of water: ~ 18

MW of anhydrous Magnesium Sulfate: 120.67

19g of heptahydrate = 19 / (246.67) = .077026

7(.077026) = .539 mol (18g) = 9.702 g Water

19-9.702 = 9.298 g WHICH IS WRONG please explain along with correct answer

Explanation / Answer

your method is correct. You have entered your answer.

MW of heptahydrate: 246.67

MW of water: ~ 18

19-9.702 = 9.298 g

Please enter 9.298 g instead of 9.928g
