flame photometry is based upon the principle that an alkali metal salt placed into a non-luminous flame will ionise and absorb a specific wavelength or energy from the flame and then emit light of a particular or characteristic wavelength. The light is emitted as the excited atoms decay to the unexcited ground state ( more stable). The intensity of emission is proportional to the concentration of the element in the solution.
