Explain why a virus must be a dsDNA virus to exhibit latency. Explain why the immune system is not capable of detecting proviruses Explain why the immune system cannot completely eliminate an infection by a dsDNA virus capable of making a provirusExplanation / Answer
Latent viruses are those viruses that incorporates their genetic material into the genetic material of the host cell. Latent viruses usually contain the information necessary to reverse the latent state. The viral genetic material can leave the host genome to begin the manufacture of new virus particles. An example of a latent virus include the HIVs. The latent form of HIV is particularly insidious from the point of view of treatment. The chronic HIV infection stage is known as the latent or asymptomatic stage. During this stage, you usually won’t have as many symptoms as you did during the acute phase. The virus multiplies less quickly during the chronic stage. However, you can still transmit the HIV infection. But the latent virus has a serious impact on the immune system. The CD4 cells are attacked by the virus which make the immune system very weak and due to this body is vulanerable to other infections such as TB, Cancer, etc. The impact of a latent virus is very dangerous.
