Question

Multiple 1st year biochem questions. For questions that have numbers as their options, multiple statements can be right. Here's how the answers are indicated: If 1, 2, and 3 are right = A. 1 and 3 are right = B. C = 2 and 4 are right. D = only 4 is right. E = all are right.

Q1 Intermediates of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism formed from the carbon skeletons of amino acids include

1. oxaloacetate

2. alpha-ketoglutarate

3. pyruvate

4. acetyl CoA

Q2. Human diets that are high in saturated fat

            1. may be derived from olive oil

            2. are not associated with high levels of total plasma cholesterol and LDL

               cholesterol

            3. may be derived from soybeans

            4. are strongly associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease

Q3. during the period of after meal we store excess fuels as _____________, _____________ and _______________. (Would it be carbohydrates, proteins and lipids? Or would it be something more specific like fatty acids, glycogen and something else like triacylglycerol?)

Q4. The pentose phosphate pathway

            A) Consumes ATP

            B) Produces ribose for DNA and RNA synthesis

            C) Does not produce fatty acids in the liver

            D) Does not produce NADPH

            E) Occurs in the mitochondrion

I think C is right for #4. Am I correct?

Q5. The TCA cycle

A) Occurs in the cytoplasm

            B) Is an anaerobic pathway

            C) Is the final oxidative pathway of carbohydrates, protein and fat

            D) Leads to the net production of intermediates

            E) Is activated by high levels of ATP and NADH

For #5, I narrowed it down to B and C. I think oxygen is needed at one point (don't know where exactly though) so C is correct?

Q6. Which of the following is elevated in plasma during the abosprotive period compared with the post-absorptive state?

A) Glucagon

B) Acetoacetate

C) Chylomicrons

D) Free fatty acids

E) Lactate

Surely the answer is D, right? Since (I believe) beta-oxidation of fatty acids occurs in the post-absorptive period, whileas in the absorptive period fatty acid synthesis is increasing.

Q7. Adenine is a component of:

1. RNA

2. FAD

3. NADP

4. DNA

Is the answer E (meaning all are correct)?

Explanation / Answer

1 A

2 D

3 CARBOHYDRATES PROTIENS AND LIPIDS

4 C

5 C

6 A

7 D
