Question
Using the (Ch. 2) case study, Cardiac Services, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, explain the importance of Donabedian's three element model of quality measurement in this case study. Give at least one example of each: 1) structural measures, 2) process measures, and 3) outcome measures; which is relevant to the Cardiac Services outcomes. Using the (Ch. 2) case study, Cardiac Services, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, explain the importance of Donabedian's three element model of quality measurement in this case study. Give at least one example of each: 1) structural measures, 2) process measures, and 3) outcome measures; which is relevant to the Cardiac Services outcomes.Explanation / Answer
Donabedian's three element model is a model that provides a platform for examing and evaluating the health care services on the basis of 3 categories, i.e. structure, process and outcomes. This model can be employed to examine the quality of heart failure (HF) disease due to reduced left ventricular ejection fraction which is the major cause of death.
Structure: Includes eqipments (e.g ECG), facilities, staff involved in cardiac related diseases.
Process: Diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Outcome: Patient's recovery from the disease.
Importance: 1) This model can be used for the improvement or modification within cardiac health care unit.
2) This model can also be used to improve the managment of chronic cardiac disease.
