Question

Suppose that your laboratory instructor offered you extra credit to analyze the cations in a solution that you're told contains only Ba2+ or Ca2+. You are given solutions of the six sodium compounds listed in Table 6, and allowed to divide the unknown solutions into two test tubes for testing purposes.

A)What test would you perform on the solution in the first tube to determine whether or not the solution contains Ba2+? Briefly explain.

B)What test would you perform on the solution in the second tube to determine whether or not the solution contains Ca2+? Briefly explain.

TABLE 6:

Explanation / Answer

From the given table, we can see that Barium Sulphate is water insoluble while Calcium Sulphate is water soluble

So, we react the cations with Sodium Sulphate solution and add water

If the solution obtained is clear then the cation is Ca2+ else if a white precipitate is obtained, cation is Ba2+
