Question
Please help me answer the following chemistry questions:
1. What are all the intermolecular interactions between an acetone molecule and a butane molecule?
2. Why is a short ketone such as propanone more soluble in water than a large ketone such as 3-nonanone?
3. Carbon monoxide gas is found to be more soluble in water than nitrogen gas, even though carbon monoxide and nitrogen have very similar Lewis structures. Why?
4. What will provide better solubility: water and methanol or ethanol and acetone?
5. What accounts for a paperclip being able to sit at the top on water without sinking?
Thank you so much!!!
Explanation / Answer
1. vander waal attraction forces ( also kown as molecular attraction forces)
2. Due to predominant non-polar part(i.e. carbon chain) in 3-nonanone.
3. N2 dipolemoment is zero, whereas CO dipolemoment is not zero. Hence, CO can form dipole-dipole attraction forces with water rather N2. Therefore CO more soluble than N2.
4. water methanol. Due large extent of hydrogen bonding.
5. Due to surface tension of water.
