This reaction must be carried out in the fumehood. Dissolve dimethyl maleate (1ml) in dichloromethane (3ml) in a 25ml Erlenmeyer flask. Place a spot of this on a TLC plate. This will be the "0"min mark, Stopper the flask with a rubber stopper. Remove the stopper and add 10 drops of 10% bromine in dichloromethane. Biomine is corrosive you must wear gloves for this step. After 10 minutes spot the reaction mixture on the TLC plate, remember to replace the stopper. This will be the 10 min mark Using a non frosted light bulb, shine a light on the reaction mixture for another 10 minutes. Then spot the reaction mixture again. This will be the 20min mark. Cool the reaction mixture in an ice bath for 10 minutes. Add ice -cold hexane drop-wise until crystal formation is complete. Collect the crystals by vacuum filtration. Wash the crystals with the minimum amount of ice-cold hexane. Dry the crystals and weigh the product Put a tip of a spatula of the crystals in a test tube and dissolve in 1ml of dichloromethane. Spot this solution on your TLC plate. This will be your final spot Develop the TLC plate using 3:1 Hexane/Ethyl Acetate mixture. Observe the plate under the UV lamp. Circle all of the spots. Draw a replica in your notebook, indicating the intensities of the spots by shading. Calculate the rf values and measure the MP.Explanation / Answer

% yield = (Weight of the product obtained / Theoritical yield) * 100
Here for your reaction molecular weight of starting material and product are same.
So theorical yield = weight of starting material.
% yield = (Weight of the product obtained / weight of strating material) * 100 = (48 / weight of strating material) * 100
