Organic Chemistry Lab Question Trimyristin
Trimyristin is one of a number of natural products found in nutmeg, including the one which gives it its characteristic odor. Based on the chemical properties of trimyristin and the amount of impurity found when the extracted trimyristin was re-crystallized, what can you say about the solubility of these other natural products in diethyl ether? While you might improve the trimyristin yield by changing the solvent, what untended consequence might also occur?Explanation / Answer
For any crystalisation, the solvent should be such that it doesnot dissolve the unwanted product. Here, the other natural products probably polar so that they are not suluble in diethylether.
If we try to change the solvent where Trimyristin is highly soluble such as ethanol, all other unwanted natural products will also be soluble in there so that although the yield of Trimyristin will be more, there will be much more impurities.
