Question

You are given an uncalibrated thermometer to calibrate. You place the thermometer in an ice bath and make a mark at the level of the mercury column. You then place the thermometer into a boiling water bath and make another mark. With a ruler your determine that the marks are 128 mm apart. Calculate the melting point of a substance in oC that is found to melt at 37 mm above the lower mark.

Enter your answer in the space provided below as a decimal number to 1 decimal place. (Units are Celsius degrees - you may leave that box blank.)

Explanation / Answer

100 C degrees = 128 mm
A range of 100 degrees is equivalent to a range of 128 mm. Therefore, we can set up a conversion factor to convert a distance to a temperature.

37 mm x (100 deg C / 128 mm) = 28.9 deg C
