Question

Decide which reactions occur spontaneously & balance them:

Cu + Al(NO3)3 -->

Current justification: Cu is not bigger than Al within the SOP list but there is a gain & loss of electrons. Not sure if this is spontaneous ( I don't think it is).

Sn + Pb(NO3)2 -->

Current justification: Sn is bigger than Pb within the SOP list and there is also a gain & loss of electrons. I believe this equation is spontaneous.

Mg(NO3)2 + Ag -->

Current justification: Mg is bigger than Ag but I don't think MgAg is a compound.

My balanced version of equations and best guess:

Cu + Al(NO3)3 --> Cu(No3)3 + Al Not spontaneous

Sn + Pb(NO3)2 --> Sn(NO3)2 + Pb           Spontaneous

Mg(NO3)2 + Ag --> MgAg + (NO3)2         Not spontaneous

Explanation / Answer

3Cu + 2Al(NO3)3 --> 3Cu(No3)2 + 2Al   Not spontaneous

because, Cu is below Al in electrochemical series. It can not reduce Al

Sn + Pb(NO3)2 --> Sn(NO3)2 + Pb           Spontaneous

because, Sn is above Pb in electrochemical series. It can reduce Pb

Mg(NO3)2 + 2Ag --> Mg + 2AgNO3not spontaneous

because, Ag is below Mg in electrochemical series. It can not reduce Mg
