Question

equilibrium constant

Hi, I know how to solve for ICE table (initial / change/ equilibrium) when given equation, initial moles and volume of a vessel, but I can't seem to figure out how to solve this problem.

the problem is stated as:

"Complete the ICE table below, letting x be the moles of CH3OH formed per liter (do not solve for x)"

CO(g) + 2H2 (g) <-- --> CH3OH(g)".

Initial

change

equilibrium

what does "letting x be the moles of CH3OH formed per liter" mean?? is it the molarity of initial input or molarity at equilibrium?

Explanation / Answer

let 'x' bet the moles of CH3OH means the molar concentration of CH3OH at equilibrium

CO(g) + 2H2(g) <====> CH3OH

if initially, molar concentration of CO = y M = initial concentration of H2

Then at equilibrium if 'x' moles of CH3OH is formed , then concentration of CO at equilibrium = (y-x) M and concentration of H2 at equilibrium = (y-2x) M
