Question
Answer the following questions pertaining to the phase diagram of a binary mixture of liquids A and B. Assume that both the liquids obey ideal behavior and follow Raoult's law.
A) What is the boiling point of the component A?
B) What is the mol % of both the components A and B in the
first drop of the distillate when a binary mixture with 0.70 mole fraction is boiled? (make accurate measurements on the diagram)
C) When the distillate formed in question (B) is subjected to a second distillation, what would be the composition of A and B in mol % in the new distillate formed? (make accurate measurements on the diagram)
Explanation / Answer
A. when xa=1 t =boiling temperation of A
here x = 1 at 115 degrees
B. at 0.7 mole fraction, when distilled for the first time draw a vertical line it meets the lowed curve at t= 100. now draw a horizontal line at that temperature. It meets the upper curve at x = 0.4.
mol % of A= 40 => mol % of B = 60
C. at x = 0.4 draw a vertical line it meets the lower curve at 87.5 approx degrees C. Now draw a horizontal line at this temperature it meets the upper curve at x=0.15 approx(Note: The image provided is little bit slant...unable to figure out the exact values...please follow this process for any number of distillations)
mol % of A = 15% and mol% of B = 75 %
