Question

Add the above mixture to a solution of 2 mL of aniline in 30 mL of toluene. Heat the mixture to a gertile boil for two minutes on a hot plate Once the mixture has cooled, transfer to a separatory funnel and wash sequentially with: 2 mL water 5 mL 5% aqueous hydrochloric acid 5 mL 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide 2 mL water Transfer the organic layer to a simple distillation apparatus Distill most of the toluene from the mixture - stop the distillation immediately if solid forms in the distilling flask or when there is only -2-3 mL of liquid remaining in the flask. Recrystallize the solid from 50 % ethanol. Let dry before obtaining the melting point.

Explanation / Answer

In Ideal case, equivalents of N Phenyl benzamide should be equal to equivalents of benzoyl chloride.

Now since n factor is 1, so moles should also be equal too.

weight of benzoyl chloride/ mass of benzoyl chloride = weight of N phenyl benzamine/ mass of N phenyl benzamid

Weight of N Phenyl benzamide = Theoretical yield = 1*197.23/140.57 = 1.403 gm
