Question
Black fur in mice is dominant to brown fur and a short tail is dominant to a long tail. What fraction of the progeny of a male mouse heterozygous for black fur and heterozygous for a short tail and a female mouse homozygous for black fur and homozygous for long tail will have black fur and long tails?Explanation / Answer
Bb and BB = Black fur bb = brown fur Ss and SS = Short tail ss = Long tail Male - BbSs Female - BBss Look at the liklihood of either event occuring Black fur --> All of the offspring will have black fur because the female has two dominant allels and will give a B to all her offspring. long tails --> to have long tails they must inherit two recessive allels, one from each parent. The female with always pass on an s and the male will pass on an S 50% of the time and an s 50% of the time. This means that 50% of the offspring will be Ss and 50% ss. Multiply the probabilities of the individual events together (100% have black fur and 50% have short tails) and you find 50% will have black fur AND long tails.
