When action potential reaches to the terminal bout ones , voltage dependent calcium channels open and causes influx of calcium. This calcium elevation in the cytoplasm causes the fusion of the synaptic vesicles.
A group of proteins called SNARE proteins aid in this fusion,they just not only aid but also generate energy to drive the fusion. Among these SNARE proteins the one sensing calcium levels is synaptotagmin. There are two types of SNARE proteins, vesicular snare and target snares.
Their fusing with the Adonai membrane is explained by two theories
1. Full collapse fusion: it was found that intense stimulation at synapse depletes vesicle count as well as increase surface area. This increase in surface area of the synapse is due to full collapse fusion.
2.kiss and run : according to this the synaptic vesicle kisses the cellular membrane , opening a small pore for its neurotransmitter release. This vesicle is recycled by closing that pore.
