Question

explain how the following factors will affect the separationof cyclohexane from toluene and the o verall efficiency of theoperation. a) heat is applied to rapidly. b) the distilling flask is more than two-thirds full. c)the distilling flask is less than one-tenth full d) a very long fractionating column is used e) no fractionating column is used.
Define the following terms and explain how each affects the efficiency of fractional distillation A) theoretical plate B) column hold up
How would the graph of temperature versus volume distilled appear for a perfect seperation of methanol ( bp 65.4) and toluene (bp110) using and efficient fractionating column ?

Explanation / Answer

a) decrease efficiency, toluene has a low BP (110 C) and low vapor pressure and could be distilled along with cycloheaxane.

b) heat won't distribute, cyclohexane will not evaporate

c) flask will heat very quickly and toluene could evaporate along with cyclohexane

d) the long column spreads the temperature more effectively and a much more pure sample of toluene is obtained

e) the opposite of d. There is nothing to distribute the temperature and you have a very impure sample.

A) Theo. Plt. is the zone in which two phases (such as liquid or gas) are in equilibrium with each other. Increasing the number of theoretical plates increasing the efficiency of distillation

B) Colum h.u. is the liquid that is trapped in the packing material of the column. The more a liquid is held up, the more contact there is between the liquid and vapor phase increasing the efficiency of distillation. Basically it promotes the separation between more and less volatile substances.

The volume on the graph would increase dramatically at 65.4 C, indicating distillation of methanol (nearly horizonatl line). Once T goes past the BP of methanol volume will stay basically the same (nearly vertical line). When T reaches 110 C you will see another horizontal line as mopre and more toluene is distilled.
