Green Colorless Violet
By adding NH3to the solution, the solution turned violet which shows there was a shift to the right because the reactant concentration of NH3increased. Drops of concentrated HCl were added to the solution and transitioned to a light green this indicates a shift towards the reactants because ?
Can someone explain why adding concentrated HCl would cause the solution to turn green (indicating a shift to the left/reactants) ?
Explanation / Answer
HCl is a acid and NH3 is a base so on addition of HCl to the solution it will react NH3
HCl + NH3 = NH4+ + Cl-
because of this acid-base reaction concentration of NH3 will decreases thus reaction shifts towards right and solution turn green.
