Question

A major ecological concern, the greenhouse effect is cause by A) the release of heat energy from burning fossil fuels. B) the increase in atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases (CO_2, CH_4, and N_2O) C) the destruction of ozone in e upper atmosphere. D) overuse of fertilizers in farming. E) global Warming. In many insects, females possess a thin, hollow tube called an ovipositor at the end of the abdomen. They poke t the tube into the ground or a leaf & and lay their eggs through the tube. Bees have modified the structure of the tube such that instead of delivering the eggs, it delivers a toxin, and we now call the tube 'a stinger." According to this information, which of the statements below is correct? A) Ovipositors and stingers are homologous structures. B) The ancestors of all insects must have had stingers. C) The stinger is a vestigial structure in bees. D) The change from an ovipositor to a stinger most likely occurred through genetic drift. E) Since only female bees have stingers, the stinger is a sexually selected trait. Which of the following statements is supported by the universality of the genetic code? A) All living organisms are descended from the same ancestor. B) The sequence of DNA bases is nearly the same in the chromosomes of all organisms C) All species have existed for a very long time. D) Genetic mutations must be rare. Which of the following statements is TRUE regarding theories in science? A) Theories can include personal opinions and beliefs. B) Theories are incomplete, temporary ideas. C) Theories have been tested many times. D) Theories are "hunches" scientists have. Healthy corals are able to photosynthesize. As more corals become bleached from higher water temperatures, what would result? A) Higher CO_2 levels in the ocean B) Higher O_2 levels in the ocean C) Higher pH levels in the ocean D) Higher pollution levels in the ocean According to the theory of evolution, which part of evolution is random? A) Mutations and natural selection are both random. B) Mutations are random, but natural selection is not. C) Natural selection is random, but mutations are not. D) Neither mutations nor natural selection are random.

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

As per our regulations, the first full question is to be answered. I have answered a couple more for your ease.

26. The answer is option B. Increase in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gasses.

The gasses such as CO2, CH4 are released by various industrial, domestic activities. During the day time, the earth surface warms up because of sun rays. At night the heat is dissipated in the atmosphere and earth surface cools down. But when these greenhouse gasses are present in the atmosphere, they do not allow for the easy heat dissipation, thus keeping the earth surface warmer. The similar thing happens in the greenhouse where plants are grown. This is also one reason for global warming.

28. The answer is option A.

All the organisms are descendants from one common ancestor. Because of this, the genetic code has essentially remained common across the phylum.

29. Options C.

The theory is a set of rule or arguments which describe a condition or a situation under given parameters. These theories are tested with time and different aspect. They hold true no matter who and what is being tested. No personal opinion is a part of a theory.

30. option A.

The failure to photosynthesize means a rise in CO2 in an ocean. This rise in CO2 causes pH to drop ( more acidic) and is a threat to most ocean-dwelling organisms.
