Question
1) The octane rating of gasoline is a relationship of the burning efficiency of the given gasoline mixture to the burning efficiency of octane (C8H18). (Figure 1) Like most hydrocarbons, octane reacts with oxygen gas to produce carbon dioxide and water. The unbalanced equation for this reaction is
C8H18(g)+O2(g)?CO2(g)+H2O(g)
2C8H18(g)+25O2(g)?16CO2(g)+18H2O(g)
KCl (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) ?SrCl2 (aq) + KOH (aq) ?
LiNO3 (aq) + NaOH (aq) ?
(NH4)2CO3 (aq) + Ba(NO3)2 (aq) ?
.............................................................................................................................................................
3) Using the activity series for displacement reactions, predict which of the following reactions will occur:
I. Ni(s) + AgNO3 (aq) ?
II. Zn(s) + HCl (aq) ?
III. H2(g) + Mg(NO3)2 (aq)
a) I and III only
b) I only
c) I and II only
d) III only
Explanation / Answer
1) 2 moles of octane requires moles of O2 = 25
1 mol of octane will require moles of O2 = 25/2 = 12.5
0.22 mol of octane will require moles of O2 = 12.5 x 0.22 = 2.75
But, moles of O@ available = 0.610 mol
Thus, oxygen will be the limitting reagent.
2) 1,2 & 4 will produce a methasis reactionm, which is nothing but just a double displacement reaction.
