For all stars show all WORK and CALCULATIONS
What is a pH? How is pH related to concentration of acid and base? As [H + ] increases what happens to the pH? As [OH - ] increases what happens to the pH? What is the equivalence point in a titration? A strong acid is neutralized with a strong base, what is the pH of the solution at the equivalence point? Why? What is the molarity of a 10.0 mL sample of HCl that was neutralized using 27.34 mL of 0.09785 MNaOH Calculate the relative average deviation in ppt for the results obtained by a student who calculated the Molarities of HCl as follows: 0.2456 M, 0.2458 M, and 0.2464 M.Explanation / Answer
1) pH is measure of strength of acid ,
pH = -log [H+]
2) If pH < 7 the solution is said to be acidic , if pH > 7 solution is basic.
3) as [H+] increases pH decreases
4) as [OH-] increases pH increases
5) When number of moles of acid = number of moles of base during titration , at that point it is said to be equivalence point.
6) When strong and strong base interacts we get neutal water and salts. pH = 7 ( neutral)
7) Molarity of HCl x Vol of HCl = Molarity of NaOH x vol of NaOH
M (HCl) x 10 = 0.09785 x 27.34
M(HCl) = 0.2675
8) devitions are = ( 0.2675-0.2456) = 0.0219 ,
0.2675- 0.2458 = 0.0217,
0.2675-0.2464 = 0.0211
relative deviations = ( 0.0219/0.2675) = 0.0819
( 0.0217/0.2675) = 0.0811
( 0.0211/0.2675) = 0.0789
avg of all = ( 0.0819+0.0811+0.0789)/3 = 0.0806
