Question
ok so here is my question I have this organic compound and they have been asking for the name of the allkane well I'm in hybrid class and in my notes there was nothing on name of allkanes is this diffent then nameing via IUPAC I'm going after the longest chain and then doing the sustituant names by number that come off the carbon and I"ve gotten 3 probems wrong this way could some explain what I'm doing wrong is is one exaple. The longest chain has 8 I believe but what do you do with substiuant that isn't on the chain? Am I approaching this problem wrong some pleae help , thanks
Explanation / Answer
The longest chain of carbons contain 8 atoms.
On the third carbon, you can see a tail with 2-carbons attached. thus, it is ethyl group.
On the fourth carbon, you can see an isopropyl group (3 carbons but attached from the central carbon).
Thus, the IUPAC name for this molecule is:
3-ethyl 4-isopropyl octane
