Q1/  why were you instructed to redo the test for an acidic gas if your litmus paper had dots? what went wrong? how can you avoid mistake?


Q2/Rewrite the following laboratory notebook entry so that all the procedures and observations are properly recorded.

Test four

procedure: 1.5 ml in small test tube

                      I added 4 drops of Ba(OH)

observation:      clear.

                         clear with white cloudy ppt. that does not settle.

                           still cloudy later.

(1) It could be that the paper has also been bleached slightly, which is likely if you're using chlorine or it's produced in the reaction you're monitoring.

The solution you're testing the pH of isn't properly mixed. I.e. some bits of it more acidic than others.

It could also just be that some of the litmus paper wasn't dyed properly, in which case just get a new bit of litmus and hope it doesn't do the same.
