Question

A researcher put 0.650 mol PCl3 and 0.715 mol Cl2 into a 3.10 L vessel at a given temperature to produce phosphorus pentachloride, PCl5:

What will be the composition of this gaseous mixture at equilibrium?
Kc = 25.6 at the temperature of this experiment.

[PCl3] =  M

[Cl2] =  M

[PCl5] =  M

A researcher put 0.650 mol PCl3 and 0.715 mol Cl2 into a 3.10 L vessel at a given temperature to produce phosphorus pentachloride, PCl5: PCl3(g) + Cl2(g) PCl5(g) What will be the composition of this gaseous mixture at equilibrium? Kc = 25.6 at the temperature of this experiment. [PCl3] = M [Cl2] = M [PCl5] = M

Explanation / Answer

For the given reaction -

                     PCl3 (g) + Cl2 (g) --------> PCl5 (g)

I(mol)             0.540         0.378                 0

C                    -x                -x                       +x

Eq              (0.540-x)      (0.378-x)             x

Thus -

                   Kc = 25.6 = 3.30 x / (0.540-x)(0.378-x) [Since volume of container = 3.30 L

By solving - x = 0.259 M

Thus -at equilibrium

PCl3 = 0.540-0.259 = 0.281 M

Cl2 = 0.378-0.259 = 0.119 M

PCl5 = 0.259 M
