Question

Design a question to ask yourself about a specific mental disorder by identifying the symptoms, and diagnose the disorder based on the diagnostic criteria, exclusion principle, pharmacological treatment and side effects,

OR compare and contrast the similarities and differences of a specific neurobiological mechanism or a mental disorder or a neuropharmacological drug that were discussed in the lectures of this course, but not repeated/duplicated in the above

questions.

a. State the specific neuropharmacological or disorder question that you would ask yourself with relevance to the materials covered in the lectures.

b. Answer the above question by describing the specific neurobiological mechanisms involved in details. The answer should show your comprehension of the material, and your own analytic thinking that is uniquely different from just copying down some facts. (For instance, compare and contrast a disorder or treatment would constitute your own analytical thinking.)

Explanation / Answer

a) The neuropharmacalogical disorder that I would like to discuss is Schizophrenia. It is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Schizophrenics will lose touch with reality. Symptoms occur between 16 - 30 years of age. There are three kinds of symptoms; positive (hallucinations, delusions, thought disorder and mood disorder), negative (anhedonia, reduced speaking, flateffects) and cognitive (poor executive functioning, problems in working memory). Schizophrenia can be diagnosed based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5), or the World Health Organization's International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10). Treatment includes anti psychotics and cognitive behavior therapy.

b) Schizophrenics have an imbalance of the brain neurotransmitters like dopamine, glutamate and serotonin. The imbalance of these chemicals affects the way a person’s brain reacts to stimuli. Schizophrenics are overwhelmed by sensory information. This problem in processing different sounds, sights, smells and tastes can also lead to hallucinations or delusions.
