1. Four elements have the following ionization energies in kJ/mol: 762, 709, 579, and 558. The elements, in random order are Ga, Ge, In, and Sn. Which element has an ionization energy of 558 kJ/mol? 762 kJ/mol?
2. The first four ionization energies for aluminum are 578, 1,817, 2,745, and 11,577 kJ/mol. These values represent the formation of the Al1+, Al2+, Al3+, and Al4+ ions respectivly. Suggest a reason for the comparatively high fourth ionization energy of aluminum. Use your periodic table.
3. Suggest a reason why iodine likes to form negative ions as opposed to positive ones.
Explanation / Answer
1) In------------ IP value 558 kJ/mol, Ge --------------------- IP value 762 kJ/mol
2) Al fourth IP value is very high compared to 1st,2nd,3rd IP values . it is due to inert gas configuration of Al+3. once Al loose three electron that acquire Ne configuration . in that configuration Al+3 ion very stable . inorder to remove anothe electron from it we need use more energy.
3) iodine 7th group element . so it generally form negative ion to reach nearest inert gas configuration.
iodine can also form positive ion it is due to high electro positive than electro negitivity chararcter. due to domination of electro positive character it can act as metal . and can form positive ion
