Question
1-(a)Some properties of D-isomenthol are listed. Fill in the corresponding properties for L-isomenthol.
i believe that the corresponding numbers for L-isomenthol should be exactly the same as the D-isomenthol since they have the same physical properties! ! please correct me if i am wrong!!
(b) Using the information from the above table only, is L-isomenthol levorotory or Dextrortatory?explain.
--so i think it's D because of the rotation sign! am I right?
2- Normal amino acids, used to make protein, are in the L-configuration. what would be most likely to happen if you ate food with the amino acid D-alanin instead of L-alainine?
thank you in advance!
Explanation / Answer
a) D- Isomenthol and L-isomenthol are enantiomers which have exactly identical physical properties except optical rotation. Thus they differ only in their optical rotation whose magnitude is same with opposite sign.
b) Yes. D-menthol is dextrorotattory as the given sign for optical rotation is+, making its L- isomer laevorotatory.
2. Our body can absorb naturally occurring L- aminoacids as the enzymes in the body are very specific to the structure. They work like lock and key mechanism. D- amino acids have diferent levers which can not open the lock of enzymes. thus they are not digested in the body.
