Question
1. Observation: You went out to a local coastal marsh and took a sediment core. You look at it and find a layer of grass material about 6 cm thick from the surface. Below that layer, you find a 3cm thick layer of coral reef sand and very old algal material. How would you interpret the different layers and why is there a thick layer of marine sediment in a coastal salt marsh?
2. You are volunteering on an archeological dig in mountains that are 3000 meters above sea level. Your team finds a fossilized organism at the top of the mountain. Upon inspection, the organism is a marine organism akin to a sea urchin that lived hundreds of millions of years ago in the Triassic Period. Describe the process of how a living marine mammal in the Triassic came to be found at the top of a mountain on land. Use material and terms from your reading to answer this question.
3. The 1964 earthquake, called the Great Alaska Earthquake, was immensely useful for researchers to learn about megathrust earthquakes. Describe how the analysis of the effects of this earthquake illuminated scientific knowledge.
Explanation / Answer
answer- the sediment core that we got from the coastal march includes 6 cm of grass material and below this 6cm layer there is presence of coral algae. these algae layer is formed by the activity of algae. there is presence of marine sediment these sediments came by the activity longshore current. these sediment brings from the continental shelf by the turbidity currents. In this region there is absence of tree only small grasses are present. this thick marine sediment lies on the bottom these are formed by the constant supply of sediment from the continental shelf by the ocean turbidity currents. above this layer there was depostion of coral reef this are formed by the activity of various algae.
answer- the presence of sea urchin on mountain 3000 meter above sea level in present time. the presence of sea urchin represent there were period of transgression process takes during Jurassic because of this sea water moves toward land. this transgression were takes places During the period of Jurassic. the age of marine mammal was triassic. during the period of Jurassic marine transgression takes place and sea water moves toward land and sea urchin deposit on the land.
answer- Great alaska earthquake was massive earthquake that were takes place on 27 march 1964 at Prince william sound region of the alaska. the magnitude of this massive earthquake was 9.2. the epicenter of this massive earthquake was 10km. the major cause of this earthquake was northward motion of pacific plate with velocity of 5-7cm/year. because of this region of southern alaska wrapped. this earthquake cause huge damage. total 130000 sq km coverred in damage region. the death troll reach upto 131. because of this earthquake latouche area uplifted 18m to the southeast direction. the hinge line that separte the uplift and subsidence zone extended from the prince william sound to the southeast coast of Kodiak Island.
