Question
Human Impacts on the Rainforest-Past and Present Directions: For each time frame below, provide the amount of trees per acre and rate of destruction (or improvement if that is the case). Fill in the remaining portions of the chart. Be sure to include at least three academic sources (please do not use blogs or Wikipedia). For maximum points, include detailed information, include units, and include citations. Explanation / Answer
Amazon river basin is the home to the largest rainforest of the earth. This basin roughly covers about 40% of the area of the South American continent. Most of the amazon basin is in Brazil. The Amazon consists of mixture of diverse ecosystems like rainforests, savannas, flooded forests, decidious forests. The majority of the area of the Amazon basin is covered by the rainforest. Amazon rainforest is the most biodiverse region of the world and is a home to 56,000 species of plants, 695 amphibians, 651 reptiles, 1700 species of bird. The region has experienced great loss of forests during the past decades.
About 19% of its total area has been lost since 1970.There were about 500 trees per acre about 20 years ago, 250 trees per acre about 10 years ago and 200 trees per acre at present. Due to this deforestation in the area a number of species has been affected by this. The species which are mostly affected by this deforestation are monkey, jaguar, giant otter, poison dart frog, sloth, red faced uakari, dolphin etc.
Reasons for deforestation
Logging of forest for timber wood, fuel wood, paper industry
Conversion of forest into pastures, farmland and plantation. Conversion of forest for the cattle pastures is the single main reason for deforestation
Higher temperature and reduced rainfall lead to draughts increase the risks of forests fire which leads to destruction of the rainforests
Industrial agricultural production especially soy farming important causes for deforestion since the 1990s.
Mining, subsidence farming, inundation of forests by the dams, urban expansion also lead to significant loss of forest area.
The most effective ways to prevent the deforestation is by combined efforts of local communities and government in the conservation of these forests. Also strict policies should be implemented which discourage the illegal activities of logging of the forest fires. The construction should be banned in the area.
