Geological Features of Rocky Mountain Foothills

The foothills are an array of rugged hills typically consists of northwesterly ridges with steep-sided valleys and it is created due to the erosion of folded and faulted Mesozoic sandstones and shales. To the east the sandstone ridges and the valleys between them, it become lower and less separate and finally grade into the high western plains. The foothills are mainly a corrugated, deeply forested area with grasslands in the broader valleys and thin trees along the highest peaks. Many valleys and upper slopes contain huge glacial erratic and small glacial boulders. Low-lying areas are enclosed with glacial till, alluvium, or outwash material. Various three dozen rivers pass through the foothills. Two forest regions are characterized in the foothills, the subalpine and the montane. The climate of the subalpine is distinguished by cold winters and cool, rainy summers. The montane region is mainly in the locality of the Porcupine Hills, Crowsnest Pass and the foothills north of Waterton Lakes National Park. Its most noteworthy feature is its connection with major east–west mountain valleys with warm Pacific air during the winter months and it decrease the effect of cold Arctic air from the north.

Recreation and tourism in the Alberta’s Foothill

The foothills and adjacent Rocky Mountain wildland areas are rather untrodden territory. The total number of visitor days is around 6 million. The Calgarians use mountains for their recreational pursuit, while Edmontonians, live further from the mountains, use both the mountains and nearby fresh water lakes. Recreational land use in the foothills progressed with the road system. The amount of use relate to convenience and attractiveness of the place. Main areas are along and adjacent to the main roads and byways and at attractive sites, such as Elbow and Ram Falls, Moose Mountain, the provincial parks, and the many campgrounds along the Forestry Trunk Road. Major recreational activities are trail riding, hunting, fishing, river canoeing, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, caving, and mountain scrambling.
