Question
Introduced species can pose a threat to natural and human systems, causing widespread ecosystem and economic damage.
a. What is the difference between an introduced species and an invasive species?
b. Describe two negative consequences that invasive species have on biodiversity or ecosystem services.
c. We can approach the problem of invasive species in three general ways: prevention, eradication, and control. What are these, when is each most effective, and what categories of species should be targeted for each?
Explanation / Answer
a. What is the difference between an introduced species and an invasive species?
Invasive species causes damage to the environment and cause problems to the existing species.
Introduced species dont cause problems to other plants. They are good.
Invasive species are bad because they displace native species and alter entire ecosystems.
Introduced species occur as a result of human activity, which may be accidental or on purpose.
b. Describe two negative consequences that invasive species have on biodiversity or ecosystem services.
Invasive species may drive local native species to extinction through competitive exclusion. Therefore, besides their economic ramifications, alien invasions may result in extensive changes in the structure, composition and global distribution of the biota of sites of introduction, leading ultimately to the homogenisation of the world’s fauna and flora and the loss of biodiversity.
Without the addition of a new function or trait, an invader that comprises a large proportion of the biomass at a given trophic level may measurably alter ecosystem structure and function.
c. We can approach the problem of invasive species in three general ways: prevention, eradication, and control. What are these, when is each most effective, and what categories of species should be targeted for each?
Eradication is the best because it can avoid further growth and problems.but at the earliest stage.
