Question
You have been working with a contractor and designer on your dream kitchen. Your designer brings in samples for your counter tops. You notice that all of the samples are labeled "granite." You want a counter top that has both white and black colors to match your overall color scheme but you want a very strong, hard rock that can withstand all the cooking you plan on doing in your kitchen. Your designer shows you the picture below and explains that this very expensive granite would be perfect. However, you notice that this actually isn't granite. It's marble. Explain to your designer why you don't think this expensive "granite" is for you and why you would rather have diorite instead of the "granites" being shown to you. (Hint: Explain why you don't want marble and why you want diorite based on the minerals and the properties of the minerals in those rocks.)
Explanation / Answer
The Marbles are basically metamorphosed carbonates, hence these rocks may react with acidic liquids and get corroded and tarnished.
Diorites are igneous rocks with intermediate composition,ie it's composition lies mid way between basalt and granites.Diorites have characteristic 'salt and pepper' texture, which are due coarse grains of white plagioclase and dark coloured grains of hornblende and biotites. The diorite are composed of silicates and hence it is resistant to corrosion by chemicals and materials used in a kitchen.
Hence,Diorites would be a better choice as a kitchen counter top.
