Question

B. What happens to precipitation in the San Antonio, Texas and near Hill Country, Texas area? Discuss how plants, surface soils and rocks, drainage patterns, and topography affect how much water becomes groundwater as opposed to entering fluvial systems directly. How do all these things impact flooding potential in our region? How do all these affect the quantity and quality of water.

C. The 2.5 billion year old sedimentary rock below indicates a record of changing oxygen levels in the atmosphere. When iron reacts with oxygen it forms compounds that don't dissolve in seawater. During periods when there was less oxygen in the atmosphere, more iron dissolved in seawater and then precipitated as chemical sediment, forming darker color bands in this rock formation. During periods when there was more oxygen in the atmosphere, less iron dissolved in seawater, and chemical precipitation formed lighter bands. Scientist believe the red layers were deposited during hot climate periods when organic processes generated oxygen and created iron oxide. Geologically younger and thicker red strata are primarily sedimentary deposits containing iron oxides in sandstone and shale.

So, 1) In which eon did this sedimentary rock form?

      2) What do the dark bands say about life on the planet in this eon?

      3) Considering that photosynthesis by microorganisms releases oxygen, what do the alternating dark and light layers indicate about the abundance of these organisms?

Explanation / Answer

answer- A- If I have to choose one location where i wanted to live I will choose London. United Kingdom. It has oceanc temperate climate. this city is located on the west side of Europe contininent, and located near the Atlantic ocean. the atlantic marintime air mass and cold polar air current determine the climate. Because this region lies in the temperate region so there is huge influece of the Jet Stream on the climate. there is occurence of the prevailing onshore westerly wind, low annual range of temperature etc. the advantage to live in this place are following

-temperature is moderate. chilly winter and moderate in summer

- temperature is also good for the agriculture

- access of free food throughout the year

- abundant precipitation throughout the year.

Disadvantages- aawful traffic because the population is so high and population is too dense

- sometime large amount of heavy percipation cause many problems

- yes significant amount of air pollution and also river pollution.

answer- B- San Antonio, Texas and Hill county all lies in semi arid steppes. These are region are characterized by the very rapid temperature change and also diurnal range of temperature is also large. Generally these region are characterzied by the low amont of precipitation.but in few days these region are characterized by the heavy rainfall in southern texas and hill country. this area recieved 3-6 inches rainfall. the flooding condition can be occur in this region. the occurence of plants, drainage, soil surface and rock and topography determine the how much the groundwater oppose to fluvial system. if the rocks in permeable then groundwater the pass to the fluvial system through the groundwater flow in the aquifer. If the rock is impermeable.then no groundwater will be add to the fluvial system. On the flat topography there will no water will addes to grounwater because there should be some difference between the water table elevation for the groundwater flow. Topography and geology of the subsurface are main factor that determine the groundwater flow.

answer- C- 1- these sedimentary rock whose age is 2.5 billion year or 2500 million year. it represent the time of end of archean eon. and Beginging of the Properozoic eon.. I will considered it on Proterozoic eon.

2- these formation is banded iron formation which form in Proteozoic era. These banded shows the alternating layer of iron rich magnetite later Mg3O4 and silica layer. the occurence of Iron rich layer represent the presence of oxygenated environment. before the formation of this formation there were no oxygen in the atmosphere. It is starting of oxygenated mode of life in the planet

3- yes there are some microorganism like cyanobacteria whose forms photosysthesis process and librated oxygen in the atmosphere. yes, these organism play very important role in the formation of dark band( Iron rich layer) in banded Iron Oxygen because the presence of oxygen whose forms this layers, are librated by these bacteria (cyanobacteria).
