Question
Which of the following statements accurately describes temperature patterns in Earth’s oceans?
A-Ocean waters thoroughly mix, so temperatures generally differ by less than a degree (C) between the tropics and waters at higher latitudes.
B-Water temperature decreases with depth in the tropics but not in the far northern and southern latitudes.
C-Because of geothermal heating, temperatures in the deepest parts of the oceans are generally higher than temperatures near the surface.
D-Ocean water temperatures are higher at higher altitudes because oceans at higher altitudes receive more intense sunlight.
Explanation / Answer
answer : Water temperature decreases with depth in the tropics but not in the far northern and southern latitudes
because at higher lattitudes the surface temperatures are usually low so there will be less temperature gradients from surface to deeper parts, and hence the water in high latitudes exist at same temperature through out the depth of ocean
