Question

Depositional environments vary from location to location. A particular place on Earth's surface can also change depositional environments over time. An area has a layer of sandstone that is interpreted to have once been a beach. On top of that sandstone is a layer of limestone that formed deep in the ocean. What can you say about the sea level of this area? Limestone Sandstone Two students are debating about how layers of sandstone and shale (mudstone) relate to rising sea level. Sandstone forms from sand deposited right at the ocean's edge and shale forms from sediments deposited in deeper water. So, if the water was shallow first, and then it got deeper, sandstone would be the first layer deposited so it is on the bottom, and shale would be on top.: But if the water is getting deeper, that means the shale should be deeper because it forms from sediments deposited in deeper water. So, I think after the sand is deposited the mud that will turn into shale would sink under the sand and form a layer there because it forms in deeper water. With which student do you agree? Why? The diagrams on this page show layers of rock. Which rock layer formed first? bottom middle top If rock formed from sediments deposited on the land, what rock could make up the layer? conglomerate limestone sandstone shale (mudstone) coal If rock formed from sediments deposited in deep water, what rock could make up the layer? conglomerate limestone sandstone shale (mudstone) coal g)ln the diagram below, write a series of three rock types that could form in an area where the sea level is rising over time. The area started on land and was covered by deeper and deeper water over time. Explain your sequence

Explanation / Answer

A) sea level has raised due to the transgressions of sea

The general succession should be as follows , with limestone being at the bottom and sandstone at the top and shale is being at the middle of these two rocks . But when transgressions or regression occurs this sequence will be reversed
