Explanation / Answer

1) The hematology test done to diagnose selenium toxicity is called as Se Serum blood test. In this hematology test selenium is measured along with other trace elements like iron, zinc and copper. Serum/ plasma selenium concentration can can decrease during the acute phase response to illness or trauma. Functional selenium deficiencies are assessed by measurement of enzyme activity of selenium dependent proteins like glutathione peroxidase which correlates with longer term selenium status.

2. Patients with selenium toxicity result in decreased levels of calcium absorption leading to cramps, edema and pain.

3. Blood sample as measurement of selenium in the plasma/ Serum can be done from it. The blood sample may be taken from a vein in the arm.
