i need help with these quesions with explaination and thank you
1) You are at a latitude of 23.5° N and the sun is at the zenith. What day is it?
2) If the sun sets south of west for an observer in the northern hemisphere, generally speaking, how many hours will it be above the horizon (more, less, or equal to 12 hours.)
3) Which of the following coordinates in the horizon system is closest to the North Point if the observer is located at a terrestrial latitude of 25.0°S?
Az. = 84.0°, Alt. = -4.0° Az. = 6.0°, Alt. = 66.0° Az. = 178.0°, Alt. = -1.0°
Az. = 5.0°, Alt. = 4.0° Az. = 263.0°, Alt. = 7.0° Az. = 1.0°, Alt. = 87.0° Az. = 174.0°, Alt. = 69.0°
4) You are located at a latitude of 55°S. Where is the South Celestial Pole?
5) An observer is at a latitude of 42 N and it is the first day of Spring, what is the meridional altitude of the Sun at noon?
Explanation / Answer
1) June-21 every year.On the summer solstice, around June-21, sun reaches its highest northern declination. People live at a latitude of 23.5º north of the equator, will have sun at their zenith during June 21.
2) Sun is above the horizon less than 12 hours. When the Sun rises a little south of the east and sets a little south of the west, that is sun is less than around half of its path above the horizon and generally the Sun is above the horizon less than 12 hours.
3)Az. = 1.0°, Alt. = 87.0° is closest to the Nort point.
Azimuth starts from North = 0o azimuth and it increase in clockwise direction.
East = 90 degrees, South = 180 degrees, West = 270 degrees, and North = 360 degrees or 0 degrees.
4) The South Celestial Pole is above from the horizon closely an angle equal to the latitude.
So at 55oS, the South Celestial Pole will be due south, above 55 degrees.
5) On the first day of Spring, the sun is right of the celestial equator. So meridional altitude at noon is the altitude of the celestial equator from our location (90-42=48o)
