Tell me about the silicate minerals. Include a description of the silicon-oxygen tetrahedron, the types of silicate structural groups and an example mineral of each, tell what is by far the most common silicate mineral, tell the relative abundance of silicate minerals in the earth’s crust, etc..Explanation / Answer
Silicate minerals are those which are formed by the sharing of silica with four oxygen atoms, which we call as tetrahedron. There are 6 types of silicate structures namely neso silicate eg olivine, Soto silicate epidote, cyclo silicate eg Beryl and tourmaline, ino silicate( single chain eg pyroxene, double chain eg amphiboles) phyllo silicate eg mica and tecto silicate eg quartz. Feldspars are by far the most common silicates and next quartz.
Feldspars constitutes most of the earth by volume and then pyroxense amphiboles quartz mica respectively
