In many parts of the U.S., we often take water for granted. This is with regards to the water scarcity that many people live with in many locations around the world. Even in the U.S., some places, like the southwest, are using much more water than is available. Water is used for multiple purposes, but extensive use is made in agriculture, particularly in growing cattle and other animals for meat. Lake Chad is a broad, shallow lake was once one of the largest in Africa. In the 1960s, it was about the size of North America’s Lake Erie. Persistent drought, however, coupled with withdrawals of irrigation water for agriculture, have reduced the lake surface area by 95 percent; villages that once were on the lake shore used to have abundant fish to eat and sell. Now they are far inland and cut off from the lake by many miles of desert. This is a tragedy for many native people who once depended on the lake for water and much of their food. Note the sand dunes piled up on the former shore by desert winds.

Lake Chad is situated beside the countrey called Chad, Africa. It is one of the main four palaeo-lakes of Sahara. It is the part of bigger caspian sea. In 18 century surveyor claimed it to be one of the largest lakes in the world.

The drastic reduction in the size of the lake Chad is a big topic of environmental issue from past century. The water body of lake has increased nearly 286 meters in past 100 years. The drastic reduction of the size has so many reasons, such as:

1, Continental upliftment which caused the marginal areas to rise which gave rise to the force regression of shore line.

2, Series of drought caused a huge loss of water feeding the lake. The evaporation pace overcame the pace of recharge which finally caused the water amount decrease.

3, The neighbouring sahara desert played a huge role in it. The dry sand from sahara was carried to the lake shore by the prevailing wind. The sand accumulated in the lake basin and caused bottom upliftment.

4, Finally global warming is one of the main reason of water loss. The feeding rivers are not carrying much water to the lake. Shortage of raining due to global warming is one of the main reason.
