Question
Using Figure 5, the "SP Mountain, Arizona, " quadrangle (scale 1:24,000; contour interval 40 feet), calculate the gradient of SP Mountain (35 degree 34'56"N, 111 degree 37 '55"W) from the north base of the cone (at the 6200' contour) toward the crater rim. (On the edge of a piece of paper you can measure out a distance of 0.2 miles using the graphic map scale inside the front cover of the Lab Manual, and then determine the elevation change over that distance.) Which of the three volcanoes has the steepest slope? Why? Which of the three volcanoes has the gentlest slope? Why?Explanation / Answer
answer- horizontal scale of map is 1:24000
and contour interval is = 40cm
contour at the base of the SP mountain is 6200ft
contour at the top of the Sp mountain is 7021ft
so the change in the vertical elevation= 7021-6200= 821ft= 0.155 mile
so the gradient change in vertical elevation/ no of miles =0.155/0.2= 0.775
answer 4- the 3 volcano having steeper side are following
1- Paricutin volcano in mexico
2- cerro neggro
3- sunset crater
4-vulcan throne
these are cinder cone volcanoes having steeper slope. they have symmetrical cone shape. they can erupt in very short period of time formed conical hill of pyroclastic flow which include rock fragment, scoria etc.
the 3 volcanoes having gentler slope
1 - Mauna Loa
2- House mountain volcanoe
3- Newberry volcanoes in central orogen
these are shield volcanoes having gentle slope , lava is too thin , viscosityis low there are not too explosive. Blood basalt are main characterstics of these volcanoes
