Question

This is a close up picture that shows another the rock that is in the active mining site and is one of the ore rocks. It is crystalline with a few visible individual crystals within a groundmass that is also crystalline. The crystals in the groundmass are so small they cannot be see without magnification. There is no preferred orientation for the crystals that are visible.

Mineral A: White to light grey in color, very hard, with two cleavage planes are perpendicular to one another.

Mineral B: A light pink color, with a similar hardness and cleavage planes as what is described for Mineral A in this sample.

Mineral C: Darker in color, almost black. Has a similar hardness as the other two minerals in this sample. Larger crystals of this mineral will have two cleavage planes that are non-perpendicular to one another.

1.Mineral A described in the rock is

2. Mineral B described in the rock is

3. Mineral C described in the rock is

4. What is the rock type of this sample?

sedimentary rock

igneous rock

metamorphic rock

5.The crystalline texture of this rock is called

6. Based on the texture of the rock, what can you determine was the rate that the mineral crystals formed (aka the crystallization rate; Slow crystallization, fast crystallization, two rates of crystallization, first slow then fast)? Explain your reasoning on 1-2 sentences.

a)

sedimentary rock

b)

igneous rock

c)

metamorphic rock

Explanation / Answer

presense of two cleavage planes suggest that it as a plagioclase felspar. so it might be igneous rock.

mineral B also a feldspar which might be an orthoclase

cleavage which is not perpendecullar indicates it as either pyroxene or amphibole.

4) igneous rock

5) fine grained

6) fast cooling
