Question
A form of hydrazine was used as jet fuel for the orbital maneuvering system
on space shuttles. Hydrazine can be produced by the reaction of sodium
hypochlorite (NaClO) and ammonia (NH3) as follows:
NaClO(aq) + NH3(aq) ? N2H4(aq) + NaCl(aq) + H2O(g)
a. If 865.0 mL of 0.735 M sodium hypochlorite is mixed with excess
ammonia, what is the theoretical yield of hydrazine grams?
b. What is the limiting reactant?
c. If the reaction produces a 2.65 L solution, what is the molarity of
hydrazine when the reaction is complete?
Explanation / Answer
(a) NaClO(aq) + 2 NH3(aq) => N2H4(aq) + NaCl(aq) + H2O(g)
Moles of N2H4 = Moles of NaClO = volume x concentration of NaClO
= 865.0/1000 x 0.735 = 0.635775 mol
Theoretical yield = moles x molar mass of N2H4
= 0.635775 x 32.045
= 20.37 g = 20.4 g
(b) Since NH3 is in excess
=> NaClO (sodium hypochlorite) is the limiting reactant
(c) Molarity = moles of N2H4/volume of solution
= 0.635775/2.65
= 0.2399 M = 0.240 M
