Question

1)if the level of water in the eudiometer is above that in the cylinder, is the pressure in the eudiometer higher or lower than the atmospheric pressure?

2)why do we put the magnesium in a copper basket? (why not some other metal?)

3) what are possible sources of error?

4) for each of the following experimental or calculations errors, tell of the calculated value of R, writte if would be too high, too low or unchanged.EXPLAIN

a) some air bubbles were introduced when the eudiometer was inverted.

b) the magnesium was coated with magnesium oxide.

c) some of the hydrogen gas is dissolved in the water (hint: if it is dissolved, it wont be a bubble!)

Explanation / Answer

answer 1) if the level of water in the eudiometer is above that in the cylinder the the pressure in the eudiometer is lower than the atmospheric pressure .

answer 2) why do we put the magnesium in a copper basket because copper is less reactive to HCL (we used in experiment ) then magnesium and it protects magneisum from being oxidization .

answer 3)error can be in measuring the meniscus when it was above water level .

answer 4) some air bubbles were introduced when the eudiometer was inverted (unchanged )

the magnesium was coated with magnesium oxide (changed R is too low )

some of the hydrogen gas is dissolved in the water (changed R is too high )
