Question
Dry ice (Solid CO2) has been used as a mine explosive in the following manner. A hole is drilled into the mine wall, filled with dry ice plus a small charge of gunpowder, and then plugged. The gunpowder is lit with a fuse, vaporizing the CO2 and building up an explosively high pressure within the hole. Use each of the following correlation to estimate the pressure that will develop if 5.00 g of dry ice is placed in a 50.0 mL hole and heated to 1000 K: (a) the ideal gas equation of state (b) the compressibility-factor equation of state and (c) the SRK equation of state.
Please answer for all parts!
Explanation / Answer
(a) V' = V/n = 50mL * 44.01g/5g*1mol = 440.1mL/mol
P = RT/V' = 82.06mL*atm/molK * 1000K/440.1mL/mol = 186 atm
(b)For CO2 , Tc = 304.2 K , Pc = 72.9 atm
Tr = T/Tc = 1000K/304.2K = 3.2873
Vr (ideal) = V'Pc/RTc = 440.1 * 72.9 / (304.2 * 82.06) = 1.28
Vr(ideal) = 1.28 Tr = 3.29
So, z = 1.02
Now,
P= zRT/V' = 1.02*82.06*1000/440.1 = 190 atm
(c) a = 3.654 x 10^6 mL^2.atm/mol^2 , b =29.67vmL/ mol , m= 0.8263 , a(1000K) = 0.1077
P = 82.06*1000/(440.1 - 29.67) - (0.1077)(3.654 x 10^6)/440.1(440.1 + 29.67) = 198 atm
