Unknown 4 is NaCL and Unknown 5 is Na2CO3. Summarize reasoning  of unknown powder. Hint: you could consider how solubility, conductivity in water, formation of a gas with acids and precipitation reactions would distinguish the different compounds.

Pre-lab for # 9

calculated the molecular weight (aka formula weight) of NaHCO3


Note that the maximum volume of gas the apparaatus can actually hold is about 60mL. Using the ideal gas law (PV = nRT) and the stoichiometry of the reaction (and assuming 100% yield of CO2), calculate how much 0.100 M acetic acid and baking soda (in grams) you need to add to generate between 60 mL of CO2. Strategy: first use the ideal gas law to calculate the number of moles of CO2 you will need to create your desired volume of gas, assuming 20 degrees Celesius, and atmospheric pressure. Then, calculate how much of each reactant you will need to generate this many moles of CO2, assuming the reaction yields 100% of the product.


(really important is the molecular weight please each one so i can see which is which. The second is not as important but i would like ot have an idea of how it is done.)

Explanation / Answer

For the reactions, anything involving acids (HCl) will react with the bases (OH-) to form water. The carbonates (CO32-) will react with H+ to form HCO3-, and the NH4+ will react with OH- to give NH3 plus water.

For the unknowns, you can tell these compounds apart as follows:

#5- Na2CO3 will dissolve to give the highest conductivity of the five, while Sugar will have the lowest.

#3- CaCO3 will react with an acid (HCl, HNO3, etc) to evolve gas, while CaSO4 will not.

The remaining compound (with conductivity lower than Na2CO3, yet higher than Sugar) will be the NaCl.
