Question

There are still two more bonds from the available 2p orbitals in carbon and oxygen atoms that have to be accounted for.

The bonds shown are both ? bonds

All electrons in the p orbitals of the oxygen atoms which are not involved in the sigma bond are in the lone pairs of the molecule.

The bonds that are not shown are ? bonds.

Explanation required.

Look at the hybrid bonding that occurs in carbon dioxide. Which statement about about the diagram of the carbon dioxide molecule is not true? There are still two more bonds from the available 2p orbitals in carbon and oxygen atoms that have to be accounted for. The bonds shown are both ? bonds All electrons in the p orbitals of the oxygen atoms which are not involved in the sigma bond are in the lone pairs of the molecule. The bonds that are not shown are ? bonds. Explanation required.

Explanation / Answer

All electrons in the p orbitals of the oxygen atoms which are not involved in the sigma bond are in the lone pairs of the molecule.

the above statement is false because the electron config. of O atom is 1s2 2s2 2p4

that means there are 2 unpaired electrons are ther in the valency shell one e- is used for sigma bond and another one is used for pi bond but not by the pair if e-s of O atom
