Explanation / Answer

Ans. 1.             6CO2 + 6H2O -------photosynthesis----> C6H12O6 + 6O2

During photosynthesis, CO2 and H2O is used by plant to synthesize sugar or carbohydrate simultaneously with release of O2 into atmosphere.

Correct option is – D. Sugar

#2. Correct option is – E. All of the above.

Smaller leaves may have less number of stomata. Less number of stomata cause lower rates of transpirational loss of water.

Light color leaves (say, new and young leaves) reflect most of the visible light, and thus these leaves are relatively low temperature than a dark colored leaf. Moreover, absorption of less light also result low rates of photosynthesis. Therefore, both the conditions led to lower rates of transpirational loss of water.

Waxy cuticle prevents escape of water from leaf. Needle like leaves have lesser surface for transpirational loss of water, so lose less water.

#3. True.

Only green leaves carry out photosynthesis. Non-green parts like stem, roots, etc. carry out cellular respiration even in daytime. In fact, green leaves also carryout respiration in absence of light as well as during photosynthesis (but at lower rates).

#4. Correct option. C.

Chloroplasts absorb sunlight (solar energy) and convert it into chemical energy (glucose or other carbohydrates, ATP, NADPH, etc.)

#5. Correct option. C.           See #1.

#6. Correct option. E.

Stomata facilitate gaseous exchange (water vapor, CO2 absorption, O2 release) between leaf tissue and the atmosphere. Plants take up CO2 for its assimilation in carbohydrates during photosynthesis by stomata. O2- a byproduct of photosynthesis- is released (but not taken up) through stomata into the atmosphere. Stomata facilitates transpiration- loss of water from leaf tissue to atmosphere.

Water transport throughout plant is mediated by xylem tissues.
