Question
Pure copper reacted with oxygen when heated to form a copper oxide product. Answer the following questions and determine the formula in the form of CuxOy, of the copper oxide product. The following data were collected: Mass of copper: 24.999 g Mass of copper oxide product: 31.293 g
a. Calculate mol Cu in the copper oxide product, CuxOy
b. Calculate the mass of the oxygen gained
c. Calculate the moles of O in CuxOy
d. Calculate the mole ratio of Cu to O in CuxOy
e. What is the formula of the copper oxide?
f. What is the balanced equation for the above reaction between copper and oxygen?
Explanation / Answer
(a) Mass of Cu = 24.999 g
Moles of Cu = mass/molar mass of Cu
= 24.999/63.546 = 0.3934 mol
(b) Mass of O = Mass of copper oxide - mass of Cu
= 31.293 - 24.999 = 6.294 g
(c) Moles of O = mass/molar mass of O
= 6.294/16.00 = 0.3934 mol
(d) Mole ratio of Cu : O = 0.3934 : 0.3934 = 1 : 1
(e) Formula: CuO
(f) Balanced equation: 2 Cu + O2 => 2 CuO
or including states: 2 Cu(s) + O2(g) => 2 CuO(s)
