Both the lion and the tiger have 38 pairs of chromosomes, therefore in a liger, before a cell goes through the process of becoming a gamete, it will already have a homologous number of chromosomes, which means that is not because a different number of chromosome that a liger or a tigon can't produce gametes but because some of their chromosomes have sequences that are different enough to avoid its alienation during the first stage of meiosis. Therefore genome duplication IS NOT THE ANSWER
